Margaret Drive Special School (MDSS) was started in 1987 to
provide services for children with multiple disabilities and an early
intervention programme for infants and young children with special needs. Soon
the school introduced a structured
teaching programme for children with autism.
In 1992, the Management Committee of MDSS initiated the
formation of an umbrella body to run MDSS and new services to meet the
increasing demand for our specialized services and special educational
programmes. Hence, the birth of RAINBOW CENTRE in August 1992.
Seeing the need to provide parent training to children
registered on our waiting lists, Rainbow Centre initiated a parent training
programme in 1993.
In 1995, Rainbow Centre started the Balestier Special
School (BSS) as its second special school running similar programmes and
services as in MDSS.
In July 1998, MDSS moved into its new purpose-built
building at the same site. The new
building has special facilities to better meet the diverse special needs of our
students.
In 2000, Rainbow Centre initiated three new services: the
Pre-School Integration Enhancement Programme, Family Therapy Services and the
Rainbow Dental Clinic.
Plans are already in place to redevelop BSS into a
purpose-built school by 2004.
