STEP - Structured Teaching For Exceptional
Pupils
Introduced in February 1989 as the first structured
programme for children with autism spectrum disorder
(ASD) in Singapore, STEP serves these children from
low, moderate to high functioning aged 5 years to
12 years. STEP's core value is to understand and appreciate
the culture of children with autism. It aims to provide
a positive learning environment and a differentiated
curriculum to equip each child with the necessary
functional and academic skills to his fullest potential
so that he can lead an independent and productive
life integrated into his family and the community.
Children are grouped according to their individual
skills, strengths and interest level. The structured
teaching focuses on the functional skills and building
skills in the following domains:
- Language & Communication Skills
- Cognitive Skills
- Social & Emotional Skills
- Fine motor Skills
- Cross Motor Skills
- Adaptive Daily Lilving Skills
Although autism is a lifelong disability, early
intervention and consistent teaching and support help
children to manage the demands of their daily living.
Sessions of 2 hours or 4 hours are run daily.
